Well done to those Year 5/6 who took part in the Brampton Schools’ Football Tournament on Saturday morning. The boys won the tournament after a nail-biting final against Irthington which was eventually settled by a Golden Goal!
The boys were slow to start the group stages and drew their first game 2-2 with Warwick Bridge and lost their second 3-0 to an impressive Irthington side. However, they were quick to bounce back with a 3-0 victory against Great Corby and a 5-1 win against Hayton. To ensure any chance of qualification from the group stage they needed to beat Fir Ends in the final group game and did so 2-0. We waited with nervous excitement as the final group games were played and the league tables were finalised. The semi-final fixtures were announced and we were drawn against Warwick Bridge.
We won the semi-final with a comfortable 4-0 victory and showed much greater speed and determination in our play, which we’d lacked at the start of the group stages. A spot in the final awaited us.
The second semi-final was won by Irthington, who had been impressive all morning, and looked like favourites. However, the boys had other ideas and despite going 1-0 down in the final, they showed amazing commitment, resilience and togetherness to pull a goal back and send the game in to extra time. Only a couple of minutes of extra time were needed, before Johnny Emerson struck home the all-important Golden Goal and secured the victory. Breath-taking stuff!
Well done to all those boys involved and thank you to all those who turned up in support. Remember to bring those medals in on Monday boys!
