Art and Design
Intent
At Brampton Primary School we aim to ensure that all of our pupils have access to an art curriculum which will enable them to gain a range of artistic knowledge and skills. We also believe that through art pupils develop motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision making, inventiveness and risk taking. It provides challenge for pupils at all levels, as well as connecting with their own culture and the wider world. Our art curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in four strands:
Making skills:
This includes learning the skills of drawing, painting, 3D and printmaking and learning about the formal elements of art.
Generating ideas:
This includes using sketchbooks and creating original art work.
Knowledge:
This includes learning about a wide range of artists, craftspeople and designers.
Evaluation:
This includes recognising the differences between our own and others' work.
These four strands are revisited throughout the year through a range of learning units. Cross curricular links are made wherever possible, to enable the skills to become embedded, and to enrich the pupils’ learning.
Implementation
Discreet art lessons aim to ensure that pupils have the time and resources to develop their art skills in all four strands. As well as classroom learning, this may involve learning outside, across our fabulous school grounds, and in the community. Engagement with the community is an integral part of what we do at Brampton Primary School, as shown in some of the example photographs below. Art lessons cover the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2, and the EYFS curriculum. Details of progression across the year groups can be seen in the document below.
Impact
The implementation of this curriculum ensures that when children leave Brampton Primary School, they are competent and confident artists with a range of knowledge and skills. They will be able to express themselves and be creative when using different media, and be equipped to apply their skills in art to different challenges going forward at home, at school and in the wider community.
