Year 6 - Miss Moss

Year 6 | Bolsover Church of England Junior School

Welcome back everyone - we have an exciting term ahead!

Year 6 will be taught by me (Miss Moss), with Miss Miller will teach the class on Wednesday afternoons. We are supported in class by Mrs Watson and Mr Mitchinson.

In Maths this term, we will be focussing on place value and methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In English, we will be using the text - Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, to incorporate Year 6 punctuation and grammar skills into an 'endurance' narrative and a biography.

In Geography this half term, we will be learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. Next half term, our History focus is based on significant Kings and Queens in Britain past 1066. In science, we will be learning about animal, plant and microbe classification. Please scroll down to find our curriculum on a page document for details of the rest of our planned learning.

Our PE days are every Tuesday and Wednesday -  the children should ensure their school PE kit is in school on these days. Kit can be left in school for up to a half term.

As a reminder, school P.E. kit includes a coloured T-shirt which represents the house your child belongs to, black or navy shorts (or tracksuit / jogging bottoms in colder weather) and trainers. No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons and long hair must be tied up in a bobble.

In PE this half term, we are very lucky to have a lacrosse coach in school to teach the children some new skills on a Tuesday and Balla teaching football on a Wednesday. Next half term, our PE focus will be on netball and hockey.

Homework:

Homework is handed out every Monday and is handed back in on Friday. Year 6 children are expected to read nightly. Just 20 minutes per day is proven to positively impact attainment as well as develop a love of reading! It really is an important part of homework and we do ask that parents actively engage with their child's reading to help support them. The children should also practise their spellings and ensure they can confidently recall times tables facts. In year 6, we encourage the children to be independent and responsible for the completion and handing in of their homework – this is great preparation for secondary school life. Links for Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars are at the bottom of the page. Their logins are recorded in their homework diaries and reading records as reminders.

Reminders:

  • Children should arrive at school at 8:45am.
  • Children need to bring a coat, a water bottle, a bag, a healthy breaktime snack if they wish, their homework and a packed lunch if needed. There is no need for personal pencil cases or any other unnecessary items.
  • Children should have PE kit in school every Tuesday and Wednesday. This can be left in school.

Please check Classdojo for updates. The best ways to contact me are via dojo, through Mrs Graham in the office or a note sent in with your child in their homework diary etc.
