Yr 5 – Mrs Israel

Welcome to Mrs Israel’s Year 5 Class

Welcome back! I really do hope that you have all had an egg-cellent Easter break enjoying not only the copious amounts of chocolate but some lovely weather here or outside of the country.

The summer term will begin with some non-fiction work including writing based on our science topic of ‘Space’. In maths we will be continuing to build on the progress we made in the spring term beginning with some place value work. Initially we will be continuing and completing our topic ‘Map Work’ and then moving onto ‘WWII’.

I would like to take this opportunity to say well done to my children for their work so far this academic year in school and at home with their homework. I am pleased to say the majority of children are completing their homework to a fantastic standard and handing in their book each week. Your child will be given some homework each week on a Monday which should be returned on a Thursday. Homework consists of essential daily reading, learning the multiplication tables, spellings and a Literacy or Numeracy activity. Homework is best completed in a few short sessions rather than in one long session. It would be great if parents could help their child plan when he/she will complete their homework. Children are encouraged to use their yellow homework diary to record any homework they complete. Diaries can also be used between home and school as a line of communication if you so wish.

PE sessions in 5JI will continue to take place each week on both a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. It is vital that all children are prepared for these lessons by ensuring they have the correct kit. PE kit consists of: white or red plain t-shirt, black or blue plain shorts and either trainers or plimsolls. No jewellery should be worn and long hair should be tied back for safety reasons. As the weather is now improving shorts should be worn rather than jogging/tracksuit bottoms.

On Friday 28th April the children in Key Stage 2 will begin their swimming sessions. The year 5s will have their sessions over the lunch time period so will need to ensure that they bring a packed lunch as well as a drink and their swimming kit. The swimming sessions will run for 10 weeks for Year 5.

In addition the Year 5 children will continue to help and support during the ‘Happy Hands’ sessions on a Wednesday afternoon. The children have loved the opportunity to work with some younger children and show how responsible they are!
