Year 6 - Mrs Paisley and Miss Miller
Welcome back everyone - we hope you all had a lovely festive break and are feeling recharged and ready for the spring term.
We will write a range of fiction and non-fiction texts this term. Our first unit in January will be inspired by Ernest Shackleton's landmark expedition crossing the Antarctic from one pole to the other. We will be reading lots of exciting texts together too, but will start by completing 'When the Sky Falls' by Phil Earle
You can see our spring overview for maths below:

Our first topic this term has a history focus and is based on the Battle of Britain, a significant event in British history. Later in the term, we will study earthquakes, mountains and volcanoes in a geography topic. In science, we will finish our learning about the human body and circulatory system in particular, and will then learn about light. Please scroll down to find the Year 6 curriculum on a page for details about the rest of our planned learning.
This term, our PE days are every Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure the children have their PE kits with them on these days - they can be left in school over the half term if this is easier to organise.
As a reminder, school PE kit includes a coloured T-shirt which represents the house your child belongs to, black or navy shorts (or tracksuit / jogging bottoms in colder weather) and trainers. No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons and long hair must be tied up in a bobble.
The PE focus this term is netball and lacrosse, but we will also play some other invasion games to practise our skills.
Homework:
Homework is handed out every Monday and is handed back in on Thursday. Year 6 children are expected to read nightly. Just 20 minutes per day is proven to positively impact attainment as well as develop a love of reading! It really is an important part of homework and we do ask that parents actively engage with their child's reading to help support them. The children should also practise their spellings and ensure they can confidently recall times tables facts. In year 6, we encourage the children to be independent and responsible for the completion and handing in of their homework – this is great preparation for secondary school life. Links for Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars are at the bottom of the page. Their logins are recorded in their homework diaries and reading records as reminders.
Reminders:
- Children should arrive at school at 8:45am.
- Children need to bring a coat, a water bottle, a bag, a healthy breaktime snack if they wish, their homework and a packed lunch if needed. There is no need for personal pencil cases or any other unnecessary items, in fact these items usually act as a distraction.
- Children should have PE kit in school every Tuesday and Thursday. This can be left in school.
Please check Classdojo for updates. The best ways to contact us are via dojo, through Mrs Westwood in the office or a note sent in with your child in their reading record etc.
Here's to a happy and successful year!
Best wishes,
Mrs Paisley and Miss Miller
