Plants – What do plants need to grow well?

This week’s task is to investigate what plants need to grow well.  There are a few ways in which you can complete the task this week, depending on the resources you have handy at home.

Option 1:

Conduct your own research and find out what the main things are that plants need in order to grow well.  You could use your own books or ebooks on epic!  You could also use the internet to research.  BBC’s Bitesize website is always useful also.

You can present your work in the form of a written paragraph with your findings.

Option 2:

Conduct your own investigation.

Equipment you will need:

  • Seeds such as tomato, bean or sunflower
  • 3 small planting pots
  • Soil/compost
  • Access to a fridge, a dark cupboard and a light windowsill.

Method:

  • First, put some soil into your 3 plant pots (about half full).
  • Next, place two or three seeds in each of your 3 pots.
  • After that, cover the seeds with more soil/compost until the plant pot is almost full.
  • Finally, you need to put each plant pot in a different place where the conditions will be different.  Place one pot on a windowsill with plenty of light, place one pot in a dark cupboard and place one pot in the fridge.

Remember, you must water your plant pots regularly.

Please think about why a plant pot is being placed in a dark cupboard and why another one is being placed in the fridge.

Observe your plant pots carefully and note down any changes.  You could also take pictures of any changes.  Record your findings by writing down any changes and/or use photos.  Remember to label your findings so that it is clear which plant pot you are reporting on.

Option 3:

Conduct your own investigation.

Equipment you will need:

  • Seeds such as tomato, bean or sunflower
  • 6 small planting pots
  • Soil/compost
  • Access to a fridge, a dark cupboard and a light windowsill.

Method:

  • First, put some soil into your 6 plant pots (about half full).
  • Next, place two or three seeds in each of your 6 pots.
  • After that, cover the seeds with more soil/compost until the plant pot is almost full.
  • You need to put your plant pots in different places where the conditions will be different.  2 plant pots will go on a light windowsill.  One pot on the windowsill will be watered regularly, whilst the other will not.  2 plant pots will go in a dark cupboard.  One pot in the cupboard will be watered regularly, whilst the other will not.  The other 2 plant pots will go in the fridge.  One pot in the fridge will be watered regularly, whilst the other will not.
  • Finally, it would be helpful for your reporting if you label the plant pots so that you don’t get them muddled up and you know exactly which pots you need to water.
