Welcome to Year 2’s Class Page
Welcome to the academic year 2021-22. Here you will find some information for this half term. We will be completing our SATS assessments throughout the month of May. I have attached the information slides at the bottom of this page from the information meetings we had in February. Remember these are not exams, they simply help inform the judgements we make in class. Continuing to listen to your child read each night, completing spelling activities and maths homework will really help them.
Our Literacy work will start with a story linked to St George's Day about a very fearsome dragon who is scared of one thing and it's not what you would expect. The children will have the opportunity to adapt the story to write a similar version. We will then move onto the story 'The Bee Who Spoke' which links to our science work about plants. The children will learn why bees are so very important to us through this story.
In Maths we will be recapping the different areas of maths we have looked at this year focusing on number and place value and the four operations. Continuing to learn the 2, 5 and 10x tables at home will really help speed up recall. Mrs Bareham will complete work on time and other units of measurement each Friday. We are also excited to continue our new Mastering Number programme supported by the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics). This will consist of daily activities that will allow children to develop a secure grasp of number ready for Key Stage 2.
Topics & Themes:
This year we are starting a slightly different approach to teaching our afternoon lessons. This will involve teaching our foundation subjects in blocks. On a Monday and Tuesday we will be looking at plants in Science and online safety in Computing. Mrs. Bareham will cover the foundation subjects such as PSHE, R.E., Art and Design Technology on a Thursday and Friday afternoon. RE this term will be about 'What are the most important things in life?' and then 'Special books and stories' after half term. We will be thinking about relationships and then how we change in PHSE. In Art we will be focusing on art and design skills including drawing, clay work, craft, weaving and looking at the work of Clarice Cliff. After half term we will try making moving monsters in Design Technology. Much more information about our curriculum coverage is available in the Curriculum on a Page document at the bottom of this page.
During this term the children will have PE on Wednesday, however they can keep their P.E. bag in school all half term. We will send the kit home to be washed at the end of each half term. We should remind everybody; P.E. kit includes white or red plain T-shirts (not the polo shirt they are wearing all day) blue shorts and either trainers or plimsolls. Black jogging bottoms are fine too as the weather gets colder. No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons.
Homework consists of reading EVERY night. Please use the reading record to record when your child has read, and make comments. A maths task linked to the work for that week and a list of the spellings that are being learnt in class will also be sent home each Wednesday and be tested the following Monday. Spelling Shed and TTRS can be used as an online learning platform to support spellings and times tables too- Log in details can be found in your child's reading record.
Children will be reading either the Read Write Inc books or the Accelerated Reading books as their class/home reading book. Your child will come out with a number called a ZPD on Accelerated Reader which tells us which books are at the right level for reading and comprehension skills. Children are expected to read shorter books twice (at least once to an adult at home) before completing a quiz on the book in school. If they score above 85% on a quiz for that level of books 3 times then they will move up to the next number within their ZPD.
Our Class Dojo is our main channel of communication. We will put day to day information on there, as well as pictures of what the children have been up to in school. Please do not hesitate to message us via Dojo if you need anything.
Here’s to a great term.
