Welcome to Year 3 HWB
Mrs Harrison-Woodward and Mrs Brooks
Welcome back, we hope you have had a wonderful summer. We are really looking forward to a new term full of exciting opportunities. Pease find some important information about our class below.
In literacy, we start our term with ‘Stone Age Boy’ and ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’. We will be learning how to write instructions and also to write in the first person by writing diary extracts linked to our text. Our maths work starts with place value activities and moves on to addition and subtraction. Our history topic for the term is 'Stone Age to Iron Age' and we will enjoy getting our teeth stuck into this. We will move through our topic in chronological order, starting first with the Stone Age, then Bronze Age and finally Iron Age. Our first science topic of the year will be ‘Rocks and Soils’. We already have an exciting trip to the Lake District planned to complement our learning in science. Look out for more information about this coming soon!
This half term, children in Year 3 should read aloud to an adult every night. As well as daily reading, children must practise their spellings and timetables. Each week, our spellings are available to practise online on Spelling Shed and children will be tested on them the following Monday morning. In Year 3, children need to know the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables and it is vital that children regularly practise these. Again, these can be practised online using Times Tables Rockstars. Links for Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars are at the bottom of the page.
Reading diaries should be kept at home to record daily reading out of school, with a signature or a comment from someone the children are reading to or with. I will collect the reading diaries in each half term and award prizes for effort with home reading and using the diaries well.
Login information for both Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rock Stars
Please contact me on ClassDojo if your child can't remember their login information. Spelling Shed login details can also be found on the inside front cover of reading diaries.
Children will have P.E. on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and should bring their P.E kits to school at the start of every half term.
P.E. kit - white or red plain t-shirt, black or blue shorts or tracksuit/jogging bottoms/leggings (in colder weather) and trainers. No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons. Children who wear earrings must take them out for P.E. or tape them up. Children should bring their own tape into school and must tape up their earrings themselves.
We will always aim to be outside for P.E. so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. P.E. is invasion game based this half term and we will cover football and basketball.
- Children should arrive at school between 8:45 and 8:55am at our classroom outside entrance. Please avoid being early to avoid queues on Sawmill Lane..
- We will finish school promptly at 3:15pm - please maintain social distancing while waiting on the top yard.
- Children only need to bring a coat and a water bottle to school (and obviously a packed lunch if needed) - please avoid bringing bags / pencil cases and any other unnecessary items.
- Homework includes daily reading and regular practise of spellings and times tables.
Our ClassDojo is now up and running so this is a good channel of communication for you to reach me at any point should you need to.
In Year 3 and throughout school, we strive to help your child achieve his/her full potential in every area of school life and to this end we will all work hard to ensure this happens. In return, we expect the children to apply themselves fully and success should follow. Lots of effort in school, a positive attitude, plenty of water to drink and lots of sleep needed. Let’s make this year a really successful one!
